Can a real RPG work on a phone?
For years I assumed mobile RPGs meant auto-battling and energy bars. Then I spent a weekend with Emberfall Saga and remembered that a good turn-based system plays beautifully with just taps.
The trick is turn-based combat. Because you're never under real-time pressure, a small screen and a thumb are plenty. You take your time, read the board, and commit. It's chess-like in the best way.
Party building is where it hooked me. Each character fills a role, and against bosses you have to actually rethink your lineup. I rebuilt my team three times in one fight, and that problem-solving is the fun.
The early hours are heavy on tutorials, so be patient. Push through the first two hours and the game opens into something you'll lose evenings to.
It proves the platform isn't the limit. A phone can carry a real RPG as long as the design plays to its strengths instead of fighting them.
